Message: "Malthe or Malte" - Behind the Name

Hi, I can not find the name Malthe or Malte on BTN.COM. I have done some brief research on the net and have found two possible links, but can not seem to find the 'source' of the name. It seems Malthe or Malte is linked to Nordic names (there is even a a few links to a few Icelandic people). Secondly it could be related to Malta, which in french is Malta, however, how that has a become a nordic name, is beyond me? Appreciate any assistance.

Hej Mads,

Malte/Malthe is a Low German and Danish short form of the German name Helmold:

Old German "helm" = 'helmet, protection' + "waltan" = 'to rule'

Sometimes referred to Old German "mahal" = 'assembly'

Medieval forms of the name in Denmark are: Molti and Malti.

Hi! I'm Swedish, and I've also wondered about the origin of the name Malte. It has never been very common in Sweden, but it's not rare either. I haven't found the origin anywhere - maybe it has something to do with the word "malt"?
