Hey everybody! I finally got a chance to visit my pals at BTN after being offline for so long. And I've got a name for ya to help me with.
My grandma's name is "Wanell". Everyone just calls her "Nell" for short. As for ethnic background, she was born and raised in Georgia all her life, as is typical of a southern upbringing- we don't usually stray far from home for very long. Anyway, anybody got any ideas on what her name means? Just curious.

Thanks Nan and Davidh! And yes, David we do have our own way of spelling things down here! And since we're talking about my Grandma, let me tell ya'll a funny story. My cousin went with my Grandma to the doctor's office when she was little, and she went to sign in, and when nurse asked her name, she said "Wanell McCallum". My cousin looked kind of counfused when she replied "Grandma, I thought you had two L's"! (Get it, one L, Wanell) We thought it was funny!

I think it's funny too!! Just hope yer grandma wasn't going to the doctor for "the sugar". Seems that's the principal grandma affliction in this part of the south (east-central Kentucky).
Do grandmas generally get called Mamaw or Memaw down yer way, or is that just a KY/TN/Carolinas thing? Me, I never could say either one with a straight face... : )

I think Nan's right on the money, 'Cole. I'd come to about the same conclusion myself before reading her post. And, Southern spellings have been, uh, highly fluid over the years.

Nice to see you around these parts again, 'Cole ! Upon doing a 'net search on "Wanell", I was surprised to see that a number of women seem to have borne this name -- over the past hundred years or so.
The best I can figure, is that "Wanell" is an alternate spelling -- or anglicization -- of the name "Juanell" or "Juanelle" or "Juanella". All of these are forms of the name "Juana " (click on the blue link for meaning).
The reason why I believe this, is because I did find at least one genealogy on the 'net in which the daughter had been given the middle name of "Wanell", while her grandmother's first name was "Juanell".
