origins
Its too bad this isn't taken seriously - but the first name Zane, from the Greek island of Andros, is reputed to be an ancient name that went there with the Ionian tribes and somehow survived Athenian, Christian, Venitian and Turkish hegemony.

Pavlos is right. If the name Zane (prn. Zah-nee) has a Greek background, it is most probably the Greek pronunciation of Gianni, abbreviated from Giovanni, the Italian form of John (Johannes).

The closest name I can think of is Zannis, which is a nickname for John somewhat frequesnt in Laconia. I found no reference to Zane in http://www.lgpn.ox.ac.uk/ which is teh ultimate compedium of Hellenic names. What is the Hellenic spelling of the Zane you are referring to?

If you can provide us with some reputable sources (internet links will do if the pages refer to written sources) then we can investigate the claim. If it proves to be valid then Mike C may decide to add the secondary meaning and origin to the site.Click on the Zane hyperlink for the currently known origin of this name.
