I saw that book when I was 7 or 8! I think my mother got this name from The Cunt of Monte Cristo, os so she tells me. As far as we can work out, the origins of the name are either French or Hebrew. It is either a franco version of the anglicised Jasmine, or it come from the hebrew name Yishmay, meaning 'gift of Jehovah'. Hee hee, I'm God's gift :-)

The French for Jasmine is... Jasmine (sometimes Jasmin). To me Jessamy is only a creative spelling. I've never heard of Yishmay, and I don't see it meaning "gift of God". The name you're looking for is Yishay (Jesse), and it's not close to Jessamy in sound... I don't remember a Jessamy in the book, by the way...
