A dim and distant memory suggests Golden Mouth, in other words, excellent public speaker. There was a Saint Somebody Chrystostom I think, but don't ask me what he was famous for.

I think, you are perfectly right. John Chrysostom(us) was a 4th century saint from Syria, archbishop of Constantinople. He was famous for his excellent sermons and soon after his death was given the name Chrysostom ("Golden Mouth" as you are saying).

In Greek chrysos means "golden"... "tomos" is greek for "cutting" or "cutting instrument" so it could be "golden cutting instrument" maybe a ceremonial knife... I'm only sure about the "chrysos" part.

I think it's perhaps 'stoma': bridle. The golden bridle was used by Bellerophon to catch Pegasus.

Nope.
It means 'golden mouthed'. This was the name of a Bishop of Constantinople (John C., 354-407 AD.) famous for the eloquence of his preaching.
