Andy: for what I know, in spanish middelage it was considered offensive to give children names like Jesús and María. That's the reason of names like Nazareno and Salvador (instead of Jesús), and Asunción, Pilar, Socorro, etc. (forms of virgin Mary's advocations). Hope it helps.
