Val is one of those things that I love when I hear it. :-) I wondered about the same thing, how to make it work as a male nickname. I used Walenty "Val" in a create-a-family game once and loved it; the inconsistency with the W and V didn't bother me. Ditto using it for Walery. I like Valeri / Valeriy when I say them how I want to but I can't seem to reconcile that with their listed pronounciations on this site, so Walery comes out ahead.

I quite like Valerio. I love Valerian but Valerio seems less dramatic and (I think) more useable alternative.
