It's a pretty standard nn for either people with the surname White or for the kind of Mr Chips-ey schoolmaster whose clothes are covered with chalk dust that never seems to get brushed off.I taught with a real, live maths teacher once whose school nn was Chalky. His actual given name was Paul, so there was a pleasant kind of assonance.
