I had a friend who named her son Cole in 2006. I found it kind of funny because Cole, combined with her surname, sounded so so so much like the hero of a horrible romance novel. Naturally, I don't want to divulge her surname, but trust me, it does.
I don't think it's plain, no. But it's not a big favorite of mine, because it makes me think of coal, Nat King Cole, and Old King Cole. I don't know---it just sounds like the word "coal." Or someone with a cold saying "cold." "I have a really bad cole." Just not a big fan.
