I do find
Alma sweet and, for me, it's not really categorized "Latina", in that I don't automatically see that image in my mind's eye. Because of it's sound, I tend to categorize it with
Alba and
Alva, the latter being my preference of the three, and I pronounce the beginning "A" the same way for all three names: short, as it "pal". I would guess (based on high school Spanish class)that the Latin version is pronounced with a softer "a" sound, as in "fall", but I've not personally heard it pronounced that way.
