[Facts] Re: Name meaning
I don't know what you want, but this site is for facts about names. The Nepalese Ashish comes from Sanskrit. An old indo-european root kens means to announce solemnly, etc, and gave rise to words like censor. In Sanskrit, shAs/shis etc. that was derived from it, slowly cames to mean a lot of things dealing with authority (teach, punish, etc.) A- is an old prefix that deals with direction and space (near, towards, etc.) The combination Ashis, therefore, meant, primarily, blessings or benediction. The ending s is palatalized or retroflexed due to the preceding -i- when pronunciation added an -a to the consonantal ending. It has been used as a name for a while in eastern India and the adjoining regions.
