You'll find the origin of the Irish name Hand at http://www.ancestry.com/name-origin?surname=hand. There were a number of immigrants to the US from County Monaghan in the 19th century as you can see at tinyurl.com/lmz3zlj but none of the ones listed there seem to correspond to your ancestor.
