... [patronymic]from the medieval given name Gutierre, from a Visigothic personal name of uncertain form and meaning, perhaps a [compound]of the elements gunƥi 'battle' + hairus 'sword'.
The words in brackets were abbreviated in the original. -ez ending is indicative of the surname deriving from the personal name of an ancestor.
