1. Merith. Or Mereth. Because Marith / Mareth looks like it could/should be "MAR-ith." Marith seems nicer than Mareth, to me. -eth makes me think of archaic verbs and so it sounds a little twee.
2. I like it. Why and how have I never invented it myself? Weird.
I notice that on familysearch and it appears as a male name about as often as it does as a female name. But I'd very much prefer it as a female name. Hard to picture on a man, for me at least.
