It might not actually be unrelated. The surname Farran is said to be derived from Old French
ferrant, meaning "iron grey" (Latin for iron is
ferrum).
Edit: I didn't realize Ferran was a separate Catalan name derived from Ferdinand (just looked it up). It genuinely looks like it shares the same Latin root as Farran.
