Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the name of the main Catholic church in my town, which has existed for over 100 years (it's old for our area). Basically a fixture in the community. My grandparents took me to Mass there for a time, and I've attended weddings and funerals there. So this is a name I don't merely associate with a religion (Roman Catholicism), but a specific house of worship.
Outside of the church, though, I always want to pronounce this kahr-MEL (instead of KAHR-məl). This is likely due to the fact that I've known quite a few women named Carmella (very Italian area), but also because it prevents the association with caramel. That said, I find Carmen to be most usable as a name today, as Carmella rings a little dated.
