It's always seemed to me like the stereotypical Eskimo name--like, y'know, no one knows any other Inuit names (adding to that, it's the only Inuit name in the database here). There's something that seriously bugs me about it in that respect.
As a nickname for a very young girl--like a toddler--I think it'd be fine. I say so because in my family, pacifiers are called nooks (pronunced just like the second syllable in Nanook), and so it seems really childish. As a full name for a girl, I find it really unfortunate. I wouldn't want to be named Nanook, and I can't think of too many people I know who would say otherwise.
