My British grandmother had a cousin who was Madeline May. She went by May, but they pronounced it MAD-schwa-lyn.
I quite like it; it should actually feature in that Disliked Nicknames post further down. If it could stay Madeline, what a pleasure! But Mad, Maddie and Mads seem to be inevitable. Definitely only mn material. And the half-rhyme with Elaine puts me right off.
