The word "cilice" is used multiple times in the best-selling book, "The DaVinci Code", to describe a leather strap with sharp pointed spikes to be turned toward the skin and strapped on the upper leg to inflict pain on certain supplicants of the Catholic Church as penance. It is pronounced like "Celise".
