ArchivesI personally have a family name that is close to that (m)

Marchant and it's French (and a very old family name that hasn't been used in generations since my greatx5 Grams married) and means "merchant"... We pro. mar-shahn... Marchand looks incredibly similar and I wouldn't be surprised if it is just a different spelling of the same name.

PS: Why do want to know this? If he's keeping it private wouldn't it be polite to respect his wishes?
