Re: Pronunciation of Veryan?
in Old English hine meant "(member of) a household" (secular or religious), in Middle English it became restricted to servants, by reanalysis of phrases such as "children and hinen" (children and household) to mean "children and household staff", whereas earlier it had a sense more like "family".
