Think of the word: donation. Donatus has the same origin and therefore also the -a- spelling. An -o- spelling is simply a mistake ... some of which become accepted in time, but not this one! Anyway, it's pronounced do-NAH-tus, which limits the possible spellings in the English I speak. Could be different elsewhere.
