Meaning & History

The etymology of this name is uncertain. It could be derived from Old Norse angi "sweet odour" and ey, a name element which might mean "island" (compare Eyja). Alternatively, it might be connected to Old Norse geyja "bark", or possibly means "those of the narrow island" or "the harasser". In Norse mythology this was the name of a giantess, one of the nine mothers of Heimdallr.
