Pronunciation: bə-lehr-ə-FAHN-teez (English)Meaning and History:
Possibly means "slayer of the demon Belleros", from the name Belleros and -φόντης (-phontes) "killer of", which is related to φόνος (phonos) "murder, slaughter" (compare Ἀργειφόντης (Argeiphontes) "slayer of Argus", an epithet of Hermes). In Greek mythology Bellerophon or Bellerophontes was a great Corinthian and Lycian hero who tamed Pegasus and killed the monstrous Chimera. Later he attempted to ride Pegasus to Mount Olympus; Zeus was angered and he killed Bellerophontes but honoured Pegasus by placing him among the stars.- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bellerophon
