Benjamin means "Son of the South" from the male Hebrew name, Binyamin. When used in the book of Genesis it means "Son of the Right Hand" given to the youngest son of Jacob and Jacob's beloved wife Rachel. Because of this, in Medieval Europe it was used as a nickname for the youngest and/or most beloved son.
