This is my name and I've loved it growing up (in England). It's unusual enough that I was the only one at school (and now at work), but familiar sounding enough and written in a way that everyone knows how to pronounce it. I agree with other comments that it provides lots of options for nicknames, although I've always just gone by my name in full... Bethan. Interestingly, people never really shorten my name to Beth either, in a way that I know happens to people called Elizabeth/ Bethany.
Bethan is my name and I prefer it to Beth and Bethany. It's more unique and I've only come across a couple Bethans.
Bethan is a very pretty name! One of my fave Welsh names! :DOh, and if anyone doesn't know how to pronounce this wonderful name, you can hear how to pronounce it in this link: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/rmhttp/wales/livinginwales/Bethan.mp3.
Cute!
Pretty name. Rare but not tacky. Such a shame it's not on any popularity charts west of the Atlantic.
Again... this name is in the book Son. I like the book because the names are SO imaginable and ancient, but not too "creative."
Bethan (a traditional Welsh short form of Elizabeth)is a charming name, much nicer imo than Bethany (from the New Testament place meaning "house of figs").
I think Bethan makes a good middle name for a more widely used or frillier name.
Of all the nice Welsh names there are, this is NOT one of them. It does not sound pretty or feminine enough - especially when compared to the millions of other forms of Elizabeth - and it sounds too similar to Bethany, which is common as muck.
This is my middle name, and personally I love it! It's very strong and powerful, but also sweet and feminine. I MUCH prefer it to Bethany! It provides the nicknames Beth, Anne, Ann, Anna, Annie, etc!
I like it! While "The Snow Spider" certainly creeps out generations of young children, it also gives the name an eerie sort of beauty. Not to mention the fact that it has a strong Welsh history and isn't common at all in today's society. Recommended!
Bethan is such a pretty name for girl.
This is a great name. Could also be used as a nickname for Elizabeth, but is much cooler just as a name!
