Wow! I would like to know when the name Bethany went from meaning house full of grace to the house of figs?
Bethany Bromley published a poem that won editors choice award in 2008 in regards to different pronunciations of Bethany in different languages to the meaning.
My name is Bethany I am an author, news editor, video editor, film maker.
Since the 70's when I was given the name, the name has always meant house full of grace.
My name is Bethany Michal (the feminine spelling for Michael). I love my name because of how unique it is. I would complain about people mistaking it for Brittney or Stephanie, mostly during phone conversations when I am asked my name. However, I think that is a small price to pay for such a unique name with Biblical meaning. Bethany is a city in the Bible where Lazarus was raised from the dead, but it is also derived from the root word Bethel meaning the House of God. Every time I tell my name there is always a compliment to follow. I assure everyone I am not a red headed hillbilly, although I do like to walk around barefoot :)
Biblický slovník (Biblical dictionary) by Antonín Novotný (Prague: Kalich, 1956; http://www.cb.cz/praha2/bib_slovnik_novotny.htm) suggests "house of the poor" or "house of sorrow".That makes it four possible meanings now.
I have heard that Bethany means "daughter of my sufferings".
I've heard three meanings of this name.
1. House of figs.
2. House of God.
3. House of the poor.I don't remember where I saw the first (aside from here), the second was on a little card thing I got from a bible store (and I've heard it quite a bit), and the last was in the glossary bit of an old bible.
I've been told that Bethany means 'house of God'. It was also the name of a biblical town.
