I think it’s a beautiful name. My name is Caitlin, and I’ve been considering going by Cate for a while. I would prefer this spelling to Cait, but wouldn’t consider going to Kate. If using this as a nickname, I think you should choose a spelling in which the first letter corresponds to the first letter of your true name. I don’t agree at all with the comments saying this is a bad way to spell this pretty name; I think it makes it sound more elegant and classy, as well as making it far more distinctive and thus more memorable than “Kate”, which, let’s be honest, is a bit overused. That being said, both spellings are fine!

The name Cate with a C is very unique I have only met one WOMAN named Cate and she was the most mysterious, marvelous, gorgeous organism to ever grace this planet, and the name fits her quite well ;). Kate with a K is one of the dullest most overused name. The name Cate fits all ages. Unlike Kate who I could never imagine seeing an elderly woman named such. Kate also looks like such a trashy crusty stripper name.

I really like this name! It's a more unique version of Kate, and it is a great nickname for Caterina or Catherine.

If your name begins with a "C" as mine does (Catherine), then it only makes sense to use Cate for short. Why would you use Kate with a "K" if your name begins with a "C"? Anyway, they sound the same and Cate is a little more unique. I like Cate Blanchette's name with a "C". Kate with a "K" is just so common and overused... unless your name begins with a "K". I love my name and have had compliments all my life - mostly from men, so it has served me well. :)

It's fairly common in the UK for Catherines who go by Kate to spell it with a K. For example, Kate Middleton's (girlfriend of Prince William) full name is Catherine Elizabeth. Personally, I think Cate looks strange. Kate all the way!

I agree 1000 percent with the comment above. I love the name Caterina and the Nickname Cate and this other name Cathrina (pronounced Cath-REE-na, search it up it's a name I submitted). And Cate is ADORABLE with a C. I know a Kate and she is a bratty annoying little girl but Cate is beautiful and cute (Cate, Cate, CATE!)

My pet peeve: when Catherines spell it "Kate" and not "Cate". If your name is Katherine, Kathryn, Kathleen, etc., go on and spell it Kate with a K - however! If your name is Catherine, do please be logical and spell it Cate! Famous examples of this: Kate Bosworth, birth name Catherine. Kate Bush, birth name Catherine. There is no K in their original name - so where did it come from? People use Cathy as well as Kathy, and Cat as well as Kat, so why do people find Cate so far-fetched and absurd?

To me it seems more sophisticated than Kate--just as I think Catherine is more elegant than Katherine, but they're both lovely names.

I love this name! I've been in love with it all my life and don't know why they say that it's too common, I've never met a Cate in my life, nor a Kate, nor Katie, I've met a Katherine and a Kathy. I do not really have to worry about its popularity because by the time I have kids it won't be that popular. haha.
