The name "Cole" has a Greek origin as well. The Greek origin appears to stem from the name "Nicholas" which also means "victory to the people" or "people's victory." This is how my parents named me. Researching my name in years past, I've found numerous sources stating this as well. I'd appreciate it if you'd add this context. On a whimsical note: Cole Slaw is named thus because Cole/Kol means "cabbage" in a couple of languages.
Cole also comes from Nicholas (Biblical). Nicholas most likely passed through English and Italian versions to reach Cole. In Irish, Cole can mean boy as well.
Short name of Nicholas.
This given name is also frequently used as a nickname for other names starting with Col-, such as Colby and Colton. I myself actually know an American man named Colton who has always gone by Cole in his life.
Cole is also the nickname for girls named Nicolette.
I heard from a boy named Cole in my school that his name means "cabbage farmer". I just thought that was interesting.
