Cormac means "son of raven" - corb = raven, mac = son of. Have also heard of the charioteer meaning, but its meaning is more likely to be the former :)
I thought that #cor# came from the old Irish for "raven".
I just named my son Cormac. I learned of it while I was in Dublin and found out that it is a highly regarded name in Ireland. What everyone is forgetting about the meaning and associated term "defilement" is this is the "Americanized" version of the meaning. Typical we always need to put a negative spin on everything. Hard to believe an Irish Prince and many notable people are named Cormac if it has such a negative connotation.
The meaning "son of defilement" postdates the original usage of the name by several centuries and therefore is NOT the meaning of the name, all evidence points to the name meaning either "charioteers son" or, dating even further back "son of the raven". The name also has roots in Nordic countries spelled in Old Norse "Kormakr" which also has ties to the idea of the name meaning "son of the raven" in reference to Odin's ravens. The name is highly revered in both cultures and any negative connotations to the name are new developments and should be disregarded.
From the word/name corbmac which means son of a charioteer.
Cormac means "son of raven". Cormac_mac_Airt was an Ard Ri (High King) of Ireland who ruled in the 3rd century - it's a great story! see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Defilement means impure condition, dirtiness, foulness, impurity.
Actually means charioteer, a form of warrior in Celtic.
