The popularity of Dakota as a boys' name in the USA took off because of a fictional character. In October 1985 the soap opera "Ryan's Hope" introduced a new character, a handsome young man named Dakota Smith. [noted -ed] In a typical soap opera plot, he later turns out to be the biological son of Johnny Ryan, the patriarch of the family the show was named after, and his name was changed to Dakota Ryan. So far I have found no explanation for why the writers of the show chose Dakota as his name, but as the program was set in New York City and focused almost entirely on the New York area it is quite possible that they named him after the famous Dakota luxury apartment building in New York, which opened in 1884. It was given its name by its developer Edward Cabot Clark in 1882, probably just because he liked the then-romantic associations of the names of western territories, though it has often been assumed it got the name because it was built fairly far from the then-built-up area of New York and so was considered "as remote as the Dakota Territory." Unfortunately the Dakota is most famous today for John Lennon having been murdered on the sidewalk in front of the building, where he was living, on December 9, 1980.
