Eileen and Irene are both good options for anglicizing Japanese or Chinese names ( Ai Rin, Ai Lin etc.) They're both very pretty as well. :)
My mom is named Eileen! She is fun and creative. She was named after her mom (my grandma) (sort of) (my grandma's name Aileen). My mom had her name spelled wrong many times sadly and was called so many other names (ex Helene, Elaine, Ellen). I like the meaning of her name, light.
Soothing name.
Sounds like something a very whiny brat would be named.
I was named Eileen after my Mom saw the 1950's movie "My Sister Eileen". She said she just liked the name. I escaped being named after both my Grandmothers (Josephine Ann) as neither of them liked their names. Yea! But my middle name reflects a compromise, Joan.
I have been called, Elaine, Irene, etc. It does not seem to be a name that sticks out as unique in New Jersey or outside of an Irish community. I have seen many versions of the spelling and Ilene, Ileen, Eilene,... to name a few.
I hate the song - Come on Eileen - and have grown weary of people singing such a lewd song to me. Great way to be struck off my friends list.
Definitely prefer Helen.
Eileen is my middle name and I think it is very pretty! My great grandma's name was Eileen and my best friend from middle school's name is Eileen. Although it was more commonly used many generations ago, I still think this name is very cute and unique (also you gotta love the song 'Come On, Eileen!') Have a nice day everyone! :)
Has a very old lady vibe to it in my opinion. It doesn't sound pretty to me, either. And the name sounds a bit "redneck-ish" as well. Three strikes, and it's out!
This is my first name, and I love it. Some people don't know how to say it, but I often tell them a joke to help them remember how it is pronounced. "What do you call a women with one leg shorter than the other? Eileen (I lean)." I have been told I have a sparkling personality and I think it comes partially from the fact that my name is Eileen since it means light. What sparkles more than a light?!
Very pretty. It's also just "weird" enough to never feel boring even though it is a more traditional name. I prefer this spelling over Aileen.
I’ve never been fond of this name...
Eileen is a beautiful name.
My name is Eileen, and I hate how common it seems but it is okay, and very unique for my age considering I am 14 and it was very popular in the 40s, but I am okay with it.
I absolutely love having the name Eileen! I am 17 and have grown up getting compliments from everyone about how pretty the name is and I agree. It is so fun to have a unique name, although I have heard "Come On Eileen" probably over 300 times in my life so far... but I like the song anyway:) I hope to give a daughter my name too, I think it is very special and pretty, and love that it is Irish-ish. Also, in the current time period, having a unique name is very helpful when making social media usernames lol.
It's nice, but it reminds me of the poem by Michael Rosen. "My name is Eileen Ogle, and I run a dancing school. My name is Eileen Ogle, and my sister is a fool..."
Even though I don't normally care for Irish names, I do like Eileen. I also love the song Come On Eileen, which is an added bonus!
My mom wanted something mature and that suits people of all ages. She also does not like nicknames. Yet there are some that are annoying: Leeny of course. I prefer Eileen. It was mature and timeless and not too common. She had a common name and didn't feel unique. Eileen, however, is very unique. It could be shortened to Ellie, which sounds much younger. It could be spelled other ways: Eileene, Eilene, Aileen, etc.
My dad's middle name was Lee, too, so that played a part as well. It is a wonderful name.
I think that Eileen is one of the most beautiful names in the world. When I hear the name "Eileen" I only think of a woman who is beautiful inside and out, some girl who wants to bring light into the world. I used this name for a character in one of my books. I can say that "Eileen" represents all the good things in this world.
This name sounds very country/redneck to me. Does not sound classy at all.
My name's Eileen & I am 18 years old! I've never met anyone my age with my name and that's why I love it so much! I get called Ellie as a nickname :)
My names Eileen and I'm 23. I love my name because it's not common and I think it sounds nice. It's good to be different. I do get played the song Come on Eileen when out sometimes but it's actually quite funny :) lol I don't mind having a little dance to it.
My name is Eileen I was named after my nan who died when I was only 9. I didn't like my name when I was a child because I was the only pupil named Eileen at school and this was in the late 60 and middle 70's. However, looking back I should have appreciated no one else was named my name. Over the years I have loved my name and hope my daughters will name their girl after me if they have girls, I have two grandsons at present but my girls are not keen on Eileen so I don't have much hope.
My grandma spells it Eilene, which is very uncommon! Love her spelling :)
Not a big favorite, but a nice name... I prefer "eye-leen," but I do have a dear family friend who pronounces it "ay-leen," so either one is good.
Comeback please! Love it! Shania Twain's real name is Eileen Regina Twain. Could call her Ellie.
I love this name! It's actually my name, but I like it so much! In my opinion, it's really nice and unique because it's not common like other names. My family pronounces my name as Ey- leen instead of Eye-leen but I'm okay with that. The nickname I like best is Ellie or Leen because it seems close to my name. I hope some people like it instead of judging it, and I don't think it's more for old people. I'm 14 and some people think it's a good name for all ages, including me :)
I'm 25 and this is my name. I love it so much. My mom asked me once when I was little if I'd ever change it and I said no way. I've only met maybe two other Eileen's in my life who were around my age. I like that I don't have a name everyone else has. My dad liked the Dexy's Midnight Riders song and my mother's grandmother was named Helen so it was sort of an homage to her as well, which I also love because I've had my great grandmother in my life until a few years ago. I do dislike when people say it wrong. I don't feel that it is that complicated as it is pretty phonetic and most people have heard the song and should know it from that. If they don't mispronounce my name, they totally go for some other "E" name. I usually get Ellen or Elaine.I'm a teacher so I'm exposed to a lot of children's names and I've seen several already who had "Eileen" as a middle name. One of my 2nd graders who had Eileen as a middle name said she would definitely name her daughter Eileen, if she ever has one, because I mean so much to her. Cute.Eileen means "light" and I like to think that I live up to my name as I'm a pretty happy person and very laid back. I like to make people happy. I also connect to it on a spiritual level. Christians may like the meaning and consider their child to be bringing "light" to others.
My 9 month old daughter is named Eileen after my grandmother. I think it is an elegant name, and one she will grow into. Her nickname is Ellie, which is also a family name.
This is a pretty name, Lena is a good nickname :)
Eileen is my mom's name and it totally fits in with her 7 siblings' names. I think my grandma and grandpa chose wonderful Irish names. I would consider this for a middle name for future daughters.
In all honesty I think this is quite a nice name, and I love the song Come On Eileen by Dexy's Midnight Runners. Lively, fun and historical-sounding name. Lovely. :)
Why not name your little girl this name? It's beautiful and not used as much as other names you hear, traditional and made-up. I'd consider this name in a heartbeat. It makes me think of a girl who is tall, has brown hair and hazel eyes, soft-spoken, elegant and very smart.
This is my paternal great-grandmother's name, and it's good to know there are those of the younger generations with this name.
This name seems ok, but not very childlike. It always makes me think of old ladies and middle aged women.
This one sounds like an old-fashioned country girl name to me, and it brings to mind that one hit wonder tune titled Come On Eileen as well. I don't flat out hate the song, but I don't want it to get stuck in my head either.
My Grandmother, who was from the Republic of Ireland's names were Catherine Eileen Veronica, and she used Eileen to refer to herself, my aunt is also called Eileen Anne, I'm to used to this name for older women, so I woldn't name a girl this, as it hasn't youthful connotations for me.
This is my grandmother's name, and I love it! I wish it was more popular as it's so sweet and angelic. I would definitely consider it for future children (I already have 2) either as a main name (which I doubt my husband would allow) or as a middle name.
Eileen is my mother's name and I think it is pretty. I read one of the posts above and was glad to see there is a 17 year old named Eileen. I don't have children but if I did and had a daughter she would have been named Eileen. Not only is it a pretty name, my mother is an angel on earth to everyone she meets. That makes the name even more special to me.
This is my name, and I like that there aren't very many girls with this name who are my age (seventeen). It's nice to hear someone call your name in a crowded hallway and know that s/he means you. Two things that girls with this name will hear, though, are the song "Come on Eileen" (I've had it played for me on a marimba) and lame jokes about "I lean" that usually involve only having one leg.
