Meaning & History

From Old English meaning "high minded" or "intelligent." The name may have come into use in the United States due to the notoriety of the Elgin Marbles, sculptures taken from the Parthenon in Greece in 1798 by a British nobleman with the title of the Earl of Elgin. The name rose in popularity in the US again briefly in the late 1960s following a published study called 'Lord Elgin and the Marbles' by historian William St Clair.
