Meaning & History

Scandinavian feminine form of Jarl (compare Erle), and an English feminine form of Earl. This also coincides with the Icelandic and Faroese name for a type of bird, commonly known as "wagtail" in English (erla (or maríuerla) being derived from Old Norse ertla).
