Lovely, but as a nickname.
I have this name. It isn't short for anything. It was my great grandmother's name. I get made fun of. Teased. Harassed. But I would not change it for anything. It is a proper name. There isn't another Genie in my town, or in my school. There isn't another me. It's not like the 28 Emmas or the 26 Logans. There is no one here who is me. No one who is grateful to have had Will Smith and Robin Williams play someone who goes by my name. While it is uncommon it is ultimately better. I will always be remembered. No one forgets my name. And that is why I love it.
I would spell it Jeannie.
I like Genie as a nickname for Eugenie, my second favorite female name. I prefer Eugenie though.
This works out better as a masculine nickname for Eugene or Gene. Any woman named Eugenia should go by Gina.
I can't help but think of the song Genie in a Bottle, and the name itself might lead to teasing. It's hard to believe that this silly nickname is short for the beautiful name Eugenia.
There's the ''genie in a bottle'' association, but any language student would know that this is what a girl that was found at the age of 13 who hadn't learned to speak or write because her parents kept her isolated from speech and beat her up when she made a sound was publicly called. So, the name doesn't have the nicest asociations to me, and I think the spelling Jeanie would be much prettier. However, this should only be a nickname anyway, not a proper name.
