I always believed this was pronounced like Guy-L's! It gives me a very old western kinda vibe.
Gotta be one of the goofiest Western names out there. Maybe since nothing sounds like it at all.
I'm from the USA and this name reminds me of the consummate English gentleman. I like it, but don't know if it would work well for a boy here.
I love Rupert Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I would never name a son Giles because he would be teased and called Giles Goat-Boy after the famous book by John Barth.
I always thought it was pronounced with a hard g... I like that pronunciation better personally.
