You can make a lot of jokes about the word sounding identical to "hilarious", and you can be bullied for that. Also, the name doesn't look right and the pronunciation is a copy of the word "hilarious", which doesn't sound pleasant on the ears.

For the doubters posting here, there are currently about 500 people with the last name Hilarius. In mostly recent history the name was from a family in the Netherlands (Holland or Friesland). I have this name, and there are 4 of us in Canada.
Biggest number are in Indonesia, being descendants of Dutch immigrants. A fair number are in S. Africa, and generally around Europe.
