In Michael Cacoyannis 1977 film Iphigenia, made in Greece with an all-Greek cast, the name was pronounced throughout as If-i-GAYN-ya. I think that’s the prettiest pronunciation.
The Greek pronunciation is if-ih-JEN-ya with a soft g sound in the stressed syllable.
In Ancient Greek it's not pronounced if-ih-JEN-ya, it's eepee-GEH-neh-a.There's no soft g sound in it in either Ancient or Modern Greek. [noted -ed]
Iphigenia can be pronounced two ways: if-i-JEEN-ee-uh (or if-i-JEEN-yuh), or if-i-jen-IE-uh
Iphigeneia is pronounced if-i-jen-IE-uh only.
It isn’t pronounced like another user said it: i-fi-GE-ni-a.
Pronounced if-ah-jah-NIE-ah.
