One of my favorite historical figures of all time bears this name: Princess Ka’iulani of Hawai’i. Born Victoria Kawēkiu Kaʻiulani Lunalilo Kalaninuiahilapalapa Cleghorn in 1875, she was a highly intelligent and cultured young woman who advocated for her country and people’s rights to self-determination and actively spoke out against the injustices both the Hawaiian monarchs and people had faced. Though she tragically passed away in 1899 from a rheumatic condition, she had accomplished so much in her short life as a skilled athlete, artist, and activist.
