Meaning & History

From the name of a specific kind of supernatural entity in the mythology of the Hopi and other typically western Pueblo cultures in the North American Southwest.

Contrary to popular belief, it does not mean "sacred dancer" in Hopi. There is a traditional dance called Kachina Dance but this ceremony is related to the calling of the mythological figure.

It is not used as a name by the Hopi or Puebloan peoples themselves.
