Meaning & History

Plural form of Greek κήρ (ker) meaning "doom" and "death (especially when violent)". In Greek mythology the Keres are goddesses or demons of death, and daughters of Nyx, the goddess of night. The singular form of the name is Κήρ (Ker), which, according to Hesiod, refers to an entity distinct from the Keres.
