Such a beautiful name that has caught my eye.
Beautiful name.
Is a really nice name. I knew a Magdalene in middle school in the 90s, she went by Magda.
I prefer this spelling of this name. It's very lovely and beautiful. I both like Magdalena and Magdalene are lovely. I love it. ❤❤.
A lot more charming than Madeline in my opinion (esp the Madelyn spelling), and Maggie is an adorable nickname.
In my opinion, I love Magdalena better.
Today's name of the day is Magdalene, which caused me to think about the name. I like the name, actually (the German-influenced "mag-də-LAY-nə" is my favorite way to say it), but the potential for pronunciation confusion in the Anglophone world would deter me from this spelling. I think Magdalena would be more practical, but even then people might pronounce the ending as "lee-nə" instead of "lay-nə."Magdala, the name of the historic village, is also interesting as a name, and there is no pronunciation confusion there.
Wonderful!
This is gorgeous! So beautiful and perfect to name your daughter after Mary Magdalene.
I like Magdalena as a strong name, but it sounds to me too ponderous. However, I would loved to have named one of our daughters Maguelone / Magelone (the old French or provençal version of the name as it appears in the Ystoire du vaillant chevalier Pierre filz du conte de provence et de la belle Maguelonne – and its many later adaptations. My husband put his foot down on that, however, and we found other beautiful names for our girls on which we both agreed – but still... a Magelone just has to be beautiful.
I love this name! I prefer it to Madeline, and there are so many nicknames! Sweet, soft, pretty, feminine, beautiful name! I used to think, what a weird name!
Meh...wish it was said Mag-da-leen, that's prettier imo.
I used to think this name was SO weird, but now I love it so much! I love Magdalene, Magdalena, basically any variant. Magdalene is such a beautiful name and I am considering it as a middle name for my girl. So many nickname options like Maggie or Lena.
My name is Madeline and I honestly like this name better.
My name is Mary Magdalene and for the love of god, if you are considering naming your child this, stop. Maybe just Magdalene would be a little less bad, but under no circumstances use Mary Magdalene. It does not matter that you may have researched it and found out that there is no real evidence that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. When people hear the name, that is what they think of. And they will bring it up. How many times have I been asked, "uh, wasn't that the prostitute from the bible?" Or the possessed girl. Or Jesus' wife. None of these are good things and I could not count how many times they have been brought up to me. People have been asking my why I was named after a prostitute since before I knew what a prostitute was. Think people won't talk to a child about that? Think again. Imagine how you would respond to a nasty old man teasing you about your prostitute name and making suggestive comments. Imagine. Don't let your child go through that. Additionally, the letters g and d in conjunction are terrible. "Gd" is not a pleasant sound.
My name is Magdalen, my parents left the 'e' off the end of my name so technically it's pronounced maud-alin like the Oxford college.
My family and friends have all always called me Maddie (at one point I asked to be called Magda because a character I liked in a book was called Magda), but all in all I have never liked to be called Magdalen- I can understand why others like it, and I appreciate its uniqueness, but it has just never appealed to me.
People always compliment me on it though.
This is my middle name and although I'm not fond of it, it's way better than my first name. I do prefer 'Magdalena' to 'Magdalene', though. And the 'Mag' part repels me for some reason.
The -gd part kind of drags it out and makes it hard to say. It's still a very pretty name, but I can't really imagine calling someone Magdalene/Magdalena. I prefer Madeleine, although the pronunciation on that could be easily confusing.
Really pretty, but really long. I like the pronunciations mag-da-Len-uh or mag-da-len. Maggie or Lenny are cute nicknames.
I prefer the German pronunciation for this name, with the nickname Lena (LEEnuh.) I love this name--it belonged to one of my great-grandmothers.
I suppose it's an okay name, but isn't it also a word for a reformed, uh, prostitute?
Firstly, to the poster who is not happy being named Madeline, I'm not entirely sure why. The French form is entirely more attractive than "Magdalene" with its aggressively harsh "gd" consonant cluster.Second, as far as concerns German pronunciation, replace the "nu" with "nə". That's how terminal Es are pronounced in German.
It's pretty, and you can have "Magda" for short, which I like.
The name Magdalene is a nice name but I hate my name which comes from it, Madeline which is French.
