It has two different meanings for the name Mariya (Russian name): "bitter" and "rebellious woman". I still think that it's a cute nickname for girls.

My daughter's name is Maša! Although originally it is a nickname for Maria in Russia, in Former Yugoslavia Maša (Masha) is a very cute and popular name for girls. Its pronunciation in English is as if it is spelt with an r (Marsha) and NOT like mash (potatoes).
To me, this is certainly a beautiful name and I find some derogatory comments about the name on here totally ignorant!

It’s an okay nickname and it’s uncommon, but if my name were Mariya I would not want to be called this.

I kinda like it. It's a bit better than "Sasha" or "Tasha".

It reminds me of Marsha with a Boston accent. Mah-shah. I probably wouldn't name anyone this.
