The name is most commonly thought to come from Balinese 'anom' meaning "young" or 'nyeman' meaning "blander, more bland". The second meaning refers to the bland taste of the stems of young banana trees, which are often used to make a kind of soup (though the stems will taste bland if eaten alone right after boiling).
The meaning of "end" or "remainder" is also possible and is believed to come from the word 'uman'.
