This name just makes me think of ferrets to be honest. However, that is definitely not a bad thing! It's a lovely name for either gender.
My middle name is Sable, but I use it as my first. People either love it or mispronounce it. (stable, saddle, etc.)
I like it, but not as an official first name. It would be the best nickname for Isabel, though.
I've always thought this was a beautiful name. There is a small island of the coast of Nova Scotia (Canada), called Sable Island, where the wild horses roam.
My sister's name is Sable. It's pronounced SAY-bl. And we do joke about her name, but I think it's beautiful. When she was younger we used to say 'Sable, are you able to watch cable while you're sitting at the table?' We still joke about it from time to time.
It's a name that rhymes with 'table' and 'able', and also 'cable', now that I think about it. And 'fable'. Could lead to bad jokes and poems and songs to make fun of a girl named this. But it's not like anyone would use this old-fashioned name anymore.
I think this name wouldn't really be a good first name for a human but it would be an alright nickname or even a middle name.
What a fascinating female name. I was under the impression it was male (I believe the novel Good Omens has a male character named Sable), but I just encountered a girl with this name today. One of the female but not conventionally effeminate names out there. I might not use it as a first name, but as a middle name it'd be good.
