Very pretty name. It's better without the ghetto stuff added to it like La Shonda or D' Shonda. Shonda is fine.
My name is Shonda and I have searched the meanings of my name since I was a kid. I was told it is the Hebrew female for John and means "God is merciful". Yes, it is a Yiddish name meaning Shame or Mistake. In Irish, it is a form of Shona meaning Happy or Merry. In America, it is believed to be the form of the Hebrew name Shona and the name Rhonda which is a great lance spear. In English, it means "God is gracious". My parents took us to an Indian reservation once. The Indian woman I met said in her tribe it means as hard as a rock. In France it means stone. In German it means disgrace. My mom's twin brother gave me the name because he said it was Irish and I was born on St. Patrick's day. Over the years I wanted to scold him for giving me this name but as I search the meanings over the years (I am almost 63) I realized just how much the name fit me. I am very gracious and merciful. I wear a happy face even when I'm in pain. I am a warrior and can to be as tuff as a stone when I need to be and yes I do make mistakes from time to time. I love my name, not many people have my name. It is a strong, creative, and energetic name, if you have it, I hope you are proud to wear it too!
Y u c k.
Only a little better than Lashonda.
Well, yeah my name is Shonda.
As far as the meanings, I agree with them all. I remember when Shonda's meaning was: graceful gift of God; stone. It is Gaelic/ ol' Irish.
Like I posted above a few years ago, the Yiddish meaning puts me off to this name. Shonda is even worse when rendered as Shanda, which is the Hebrew word for shame, and it would indeed be a shame to be named Shonda or Shanda.
This is one ugly name, and it sounds trashy as well.
