It is probable that parents were inspired by a children's book turned TV series about the girl Simone who had cut all her hair off right before the semester started at her new school. Her name was so unusual that the teacher told the others that she was the new boy Simon. Baffled she pretended to be Simon for the whole school year but revealed herself as a girl in the end.
