It literally means 'the one who is free' and that's beautiful meaning. Nowadays it's quite unique because its heyday faded long ago. I'm partial to it because it's the name of my brother and grandfather.
Horrible name. The Slobodan Milosevic association puts me off completely. It also makes me think of the word "slob".
'Slobodan' might be ok in its native context but in the English-speaking world it sounds horrible. Imagine the nicknames - "Hey Slob!" "Look, it's my old friend Slobber!"
