Meaning & History

Derived from the Old English elements þeod "people" and ræd "advice, counsel, wisdom". This name was employed by J. R. R. Tolkien who used Old English to represent the Rohirric language. In his novel The Lord of the Rings (1954) Théodred is the deceased son of the king of Rohan.

There were also several Catholic bishops named Theodred in 10th-century England.
