I love this name. It's a good choice for a child born nowadays since it's adaptable and international (it's found everywhere in some sort of version - from Europe to the US to India - there's even a totally unrelated Toma in Japan), it's easy to read and write and easy to find cute short nicknames or variants for. I find it suits both a little boy and a grown man, being a good balance of strong but not edgy, natural but not delicate, classic but not old, classy but not pretentious, masculine but not rough or devoid of emotion, playground funny but also office serious. I can see it used in a lot of occasions throughout life without it sounding out of context - school, work, home or even, for the lucky talented few who get to be actors (Toma Caragiu), on stage. We chose this name for our son in 2023 and I couldn't be happier with our choice. Also, it's not overly used where I am from (eastern Europe), which makes it perfect.
Toma is a conjugated form of the verb tomar, which means "to take" in Spanish. So this sounds kind of strange as a name to me.
I like this name. It's not very popular, but also not made up or something. In Croatia, Tomislav is the more common form.
